Six Girl Groups That Could’ve Prospered (But You Probably Never Heard Of Or Remember)

Note: Forgive any spelling error you may see. I randomly wrote this at 4 AM. I’ve always had a thing for struggle artists, one hit wonders, two hit wonders, etc. It was more easy to follow up on them during the Myspace days, but now, you hear them once and they disappear forever. So, without further ado, here are my six choices.

Dear Jayne (2009)

This song was MY JAM on during the Myspace days. I really couldn’t tell you much about them except that they were signed to The-Dream and were scheduled to release their debut album, Voice Message, but it never happened. This record and “Fall Back” would’ve gotten major radio play had it gotten the recognition it deserved.

Electrik Red (2009)

NOW THIS GROUP HAD IT! They had a great debut single and an even greater remix with Lil Wayne. All of their music was written by The Dream and were signed to Def Jam Records. Why they disappeared? No idea, but apparently the group is still together. As far as new music, I don’t think we’ll ever get any.

TG4 (2002) & DAME 4 (2008)

I remember being younger and wanting them to win so bad. I did street team, fan pages, message boards, but my efforts just weren’t enough. Chris Stokes simply just did not know how to market these two groups. It would’ve taken a village.

Having them focus on safe sex and abstinence just wasn’t something that was going to stick back then and definitely wouldn’t stick now; especially when you have a whole roster of male talent promoting sex.

Any who, you may recognize Sevyn Streeter, who went by her government Ambee in TG4, as well as Mila J in Dame 4. So happy  they’ve been able to prosper since their girl group days.

Rich Girlz (2009 – 2010)

After TG4, I never would’ve thought I’d see Sevyn again (cause she was my favorite) so when I saw her in Rich Girlz, it was really a dream come true. However, I HATED “He Ain’t With Me Now” and thought she blew it. That was until the group came back with their Fabolous and Rick Ross-assisted cut, “Get Your Swagger Right” and I rejoiced. They really had something here. However, that was their last video and final record until Sevyn would eventually make her return solo with “I Like It.”

Bonus: ISYSS (2002)

Everyone remembers them. Everyone knows this song. Megan Good’s older sister was in the group and their debut album, The Way We Do went Gold, selling 500,000 copies with only two supporting singles. Unfortunate that they disbanded shortly after.

Bonus #2: LovHer (2002)

541512992

Another group with a great debut single and follow up. Signed to Def Soul, the group’s album was shelved and they were dropped from the label.

The Rise of R&B Music in Africa miixtapechiick Afrobeats, Amapiano, Gengetone

The world’s music industry has always been inspired by Africa, the continent of rich cultural heritage. In the African music scene, R&B is experiencing a significant comeback, despite the historical dominance of Afrobeats, Amapiano, Gengetone, and other genres. This is an exciting development for the continent.

Africa’s R&B scene is proof of African musicians’ uniqueness, versatility, and creativity. R&B has always been associated with romantic themes and soulful songs, but African musicians are giving the genre a distinctive new direction by incorporating elements of their own cultures and musical tastes.

Africa has a never-ending love for good R&B; South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Zambia, and Uganda have the highest R&B listenership on Spotify. Collaborations between international superstars and African musicians in the R&B genre are becoming more frequent than they were a decade ago, mostly due to this tremendous rise.

From the mesmerizing strains of “Big FU” by David Guetta, featuring Nigeria’s finest Ayra Starr, to the captivating melodies of “Sensational” by Chris Brown, Davido, and Lojay, and Travis Scott jumping on Tyla‘s “Water,” one of Africa’s breakout songs of 2023. Africa’s stars are shining bright on the world stage.

And now, African singers are also connecting with one another to release global hits all on their own.

Soulful vocals combined with modern production techniques, Afrobeat loops, and traditional African rhythms are being skillfully blended by musicians all throughout the globe. This blend produces a sound that not only resonates with listeners but also bridges the gap between the past and the present.

In Africa, R&B is growing in popularity more than ever. We see that the power of music transcends all borders, whether by location or generation, as this global journey spreads like wildfire.

Lil Durk has made the difficult decision to cancel his much-anticipated Rolling Loud Miami performance and a significant portion of his ‘Sorry for the Drought Tour.’

The announcement comes after the rapper was recently hospitalized for dehydration and exhaustion, as reported by TMZ. Despite the setbacks, the artist remains positive and is looking forward to resuming his performances as soon as he receives medical clearance.

“Since I’m still awaiting to get full clearance from my doctors to travel and perform again, I have no other choice but to cancel my headlining Rolling Loud performance.,” Durk said in a statement to Akademiks. “While I’m home resting, I am looking forward to my two homecoming shows on the 11th & 12th in Chicago.
