21 Savage, real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was arrested early Sunday morning (Feb. 3) by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, after it was discovered by officials that he is actually a citizen from the United Kingdom and has overstayed his visa.
21 Savage came to America legally in July 2005 from Dominica, a British Commonwealth. However, the rapper’s visa expired the following year.
21 Savage was taken into custody in a “targeted operation” and faces deportation from the U.S. The rapper who previously claimed he was from Atlanta and was born there in 1992, is removal proceedings after it was discovered he not only is in the U.S. illegally but is also a felon. He was convicted of drug charges in 2014.
21 Savage’s attorney released a statement to TMZ:
“We are working diligently to get Mr. Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with authorities to clear up any misunderstanding. Mr. Abraham-Joseph is a role model to the young people in the country — especially in Atlanta, Georgia and is actively working in the community leading programs to help underprivileged mothers and youths in financial literacy.”
