Eight people have been confirmed dead after day one of Travis Scott‘s ‘Astroworld Festival,’ in Houston, Texas.

According to the Houston Fire Department, the eight confirmed deaths were a result of a crowd surge. 100,000 tickets were sold out within an hour of the Astroworld Festival tickets going on sale back in May. However, there were 500,000 people in attendance. Travis Scott stopped his 75-minute set when he noticed fans were in distress after the crowd began to compress the stage.

Around 9:30 pm, Medics began to perform CPR on victims who began to fall out from the crowd. Fire Chief Samuel Pena, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and Houston Police Chief Troy Finner confirmed during a press conference early Saturday morning (Nov. 6) that at least eight people were confirmed dead and 17 individuals were hospitalized. Eleven of those victims were in cardiac arrest during transport, according to KHOU 11.

“We got to grieve for these families right now,” Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said.” Everybody in our city pray for these families and we got to get through it.”

In a statement, Astroworld Festival confirmed that the rest of the event has been canceled, adding its “hearts are with the Astroworld Festival family tonight – especially those we lost and their loved ones.”

UPDATE: Travis Scott has released a statement following the tragedy at Astroworld. “I’m absolutely devastated by what took place last night,” he wrote. “My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival.”

“Houston PD has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life,” he continued. “I am committed to working together with the Houston community to heal and support the families in need. Thank you to Houston PD, Fire Department and NRG Park for their immediate response and support. Love You All.”

It has been reported that 300 people were injured during the tragic incident.
