Keke Palmer Releases “My Confession,” Reflects on Breakup and 2023 Legal Battle miixtapechiick

Keke Palmer is turning personal pain into powerful art with the release of her new single, “My Confession.”

The Grammy-winning actress and singer dropped the track Friday (May 17), a raw and emotional record that revisits her breakup with ex-partner Darius Jackson, the father of her son. The song, which samples Usher’s “Confessions Part II,” serves as the second single from her upcoming album Just Keke, due out June 20 via Big Bosses Entertainment/SRG-ILS Group.

“Summer ’23 we was in Vegas right / Broke up with me and you hopped up on a flight,” Palmer sings. “Made me a villain for sympathy but you lied.”

In a statement, Palmer explained, “‘My Confession,’ I mean… yeah. I don’t like to say much, but music for me is a way to express myself and the things I need to get out, but don’t always want to say—but will sing.”

The record arrives several months after Palmer was granted full custody of their son, Leodis, and a temporary restraining order against Jackson in November 2023. In court filings, Palmer alleged a pattern of abuse over the course of their relationship. One of the most serious incidents, she claimed, occurred on November 5, 2023, and was captured on security footage. According to her statement, Jackson entered her home without consent, assaulted her, and took her phone.

She also filed for a child abduction prevention order, citing concerns for their son’s safety.

The legal filings followed public scrutiny of their relationship earlier in 2023, particularly after Jackson criticized Palmer’s outfit at an Usher concert in Las Vegas. His comments sparked widespread conversation about control and respect in relationships.

Palmer’s decision to address the situation musically reflects what she’s described as a new era. “Just Keke is the mark of a new era for me,” she said. “An evolution of everything I had to be and become to survive and grow as a person and artist.”

My Confession” follows lead single 125 Degrees and continues to showcase Palmer’s vulnerability and strength in the face of adversity. The album is expected to explore themes of healing, empowerment, and emotional truth.

“My Confession” is streaming now. Just Keke arrives June 20.
