Normani Signs New Publishing Deal With Hipgnosis
As of recently, singer Normani has signed a publishing deal. Founded by Merck Mercuriadis and Nile Rodgers, Hipgnosis is the “first UK investment company offering investors a pure-play exposure to Songs and associated musical intellectual property rights.”
The company emphasizes their acute focus on “proven hit songs with cultural importance.” Considering how successful her records are from ‘Love Lies’ to ‘Motivation’ to ‘Wild Side,’ this business model certainly hits the nail on its head. She was even crowned “Collaborator of the Year” at Variety’s Hitmakers event back in December!
In a statement, the award-winning singer expressed that she’s “proud to have partnered with the team at Hipgnosis and take my catalogue to new and exciting places.” In general, she’s “excited to embark on this new chapter with them.”
Her manager Brandon Silverstein chimed in saying that he “[looks] forward to working with Merck/Casey and their team to fully support Normani’s vision and invest in the long term success of her art.”
Considering how difficult record labels can be, this new business move is poised to benefit Normani through her artistic endeavors. With this new announcement, she’s already promised new projects — including an album! We can’t wait to see what Normani has up her sleeve!

OG R&B It-Girl Ashanti Showcases Her Genius With New Business Move
April 2nd marked the 20th anniversary of singer, songwriter and actress Ashanti’s self-titled debut studio album! ‘Ashanti’ houses many R&B classics including ‘Foolish,’ ‘Happy,’ ‘Leaving,” and so many more.
Ashanti reigns as one of the OG R&B princesses that continues to make power moves in the industry. As of recently, the ‘Rain On Me’ singer has officially become a co-founder of EQ Exchange, which makes her the first Black female artist to own a Web3 tech company!
Founded by tech mogul Janice Taylor, EQ Exchange is dedicated to centering the artist and gratifying their supporters through blockchain technology.
Tech and NFTs currently seem to be an overcomplicated (and consequently unremarkable) new trend for many people. However, these new advancements have definitely won a spot in the history books! Even The Notorious B.I.G. estate has something in the works. Click here for a breakdown of how Web3 technology is shifting the music industry.
As it pertains to fair financial compensation, the industry is callous toward musicians. A plethora of artists (including household names) continues to get paid for their work as if they are merely pieces of intellectual property and not the spearheads of culture.
With EQ Exchange, ownership is returned to the artist. Musicians will have opportunities to mint and sell non-fungible tokens and their fans will reap the rewards of their purchased NFTs through concert tickets, early bird access to new music, etc.
It is imperative that artists keep up with the various money-making methods that are available to them, especially as Web3 technology continues to take the music business by storm.
EQ Exchange is yet another win for Ashanti considering that she currently owns her master recordings. This will ultimately allow to optimize her use of Web3 tech and increase her cash flow tenfold!
