Prince Smooth Takes Us To The Catalina

Last night (Sept. 21), Prince Smooth celebrated the release of his brand-new project, The Catalina, at Sonia’s in Cambridge.

Presented by KillerBoomBox and hosted by Herv Gotti, the Fields Corner native brought the city out Saturday night, as the audience was filled with fans, journalists, radio heads, cinematographers and artists. With performances by C Wells, King Fiya, Looski, YounginTrue and Chelley Marie, it was proven that the talent in the city of Boston is undeniably amazing and it all it takes is one person to start the trend of putting other on.

During Chelley Marie’s set, the Rapping Make-Up Artist brought out SAV and Asiavu to perform their latest singles, “Catch Up” and “Tap Out,” as well as their collaborative efforts with Chelley “N.B.B.A” and “The Plug.” This was easily my favorite part of the show, displaying women empowerment.

With Prince Smooth gracing the stage at 12:15 a.m., El Capitan began running through his latest release which featured sampling from Jah Cure’s “What Will It Take,” Usher’s “You Make Me Wanna,” DMX’s “How It Going Down” and Ja Rule & Charli Baltimore’s joint effort, “Down Ass Bitch,” as well as digging into his older catalog of hits.

Later being joined by Cash Gotti and Dutchy Do Bad, it was a beautiful thing to see the crew not only in their element but watching how far they’ve come.

The project certainly stays on theme with its title channeling through the instrumentals of the records (as if you’re a part of a cartel), being down only to get yourself back up, having a ride or die to weather the storm, and simply staying 10 toes not. Not to mention the artwork mirroring Smooth’s inner Diddy.

The Catalina is out now on all platforms and features collaborations from Suave Life’s Cash Gotti (“Catch Me”) and YounginTrue (“Newest Type”).
