Just days after performing in Vegas alongside Havoc of Mobb Deep as part of the “Art of Rap” tour, it has been announced that Queensbridge rapper Prodigy of Mobb Deep has passed away. Confirmed by friends and hometown natives Nas & Jungle, it is assumed that the rapper had succumbed to his battle with sickle cell.

At just 42 years old, Prodigy reached success with Havoc as Mobb Deep with the release of their 1995 sophomore album, The Infamous, which featured their most classic single to date, “Shook Ones Pt. II,” as well as “Temperature Rising” and “Survival of The Fittest.” Mobb Deep has released 8 albums to date, while Prodigy has released 7 with The Hegelian Dialectic slated to release later this year.

RIP Prodigy. Our prayers go out to Havoc, as well as Prodigy’s family and friends.

A state from Prodigy’s publicist:

“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”
