R&B singer Syd recently released her newest album ‘Broken Hearts Club.’ This marks her first album since her 2017 debut ‘Fin.’

From the tracklist titles alone, you can infer that Syd is vocalizing that timeline between finding a new romantic prospect and gradually losing them from ‘Tie The Knot’ to ‘Goodbye My Love.

As previously discussed, Syd kicks off the album with ‘CYBAH‘. Syd sings about the urge to ask a woman if she is capable of breaking her heart. After feeling jaded and disillusioned by past heartbreak, there’s always that immense feeling of skepticism.

However, things move pretty quickly — the next two songs are already about tying the knot and ‘Fast Cars‘.

This trajectory is consistent with young love and the rush that happens at the beginning of every fling. Even in one of her singles — ‘Sweet‘, Syd sings:

“Ask me how I know that this is love
‘Cause it’s gotta be, gotta be, baby
Oh yeah, yeah-yeah
Gifted onto me from up above
It’s what I’ve waited for, waited for, baby
Yeah (Yeah)”

Leave it to Syd to of course add a few slow and sensual pieces like ‘No Way’ and ‘Getting Late’ where she expresses her infatuation.

Although consistent with the overall theme, the relationship seems to start withering away. In ‘Out loud’ (featuring Kehlani), Syd confronts her girlfriend’s wishy-wash behavior by asking her to express her love boldly.

During ‘Heartfelt Freestyle,’ the singer really begins to lament the extinguished fire.

“I’m standing in the rain baby
Say you love me because I love you”

Luckily, ‘Missing Out‘ provides a bit of pick me up. The contrasts between the cool-off-you lyrics and the slow-paced instrumentals evoke those post-breakup feelings  —  not necessarily of full acceptance but of wanting an ex to realize what they’ve forfeited.
