What Grinds My Gears: “Let’s Build”
At least three times a month, I get approached by someone who wants to further their music career; they proceed to @ me on Twitter or add a comment under my Instagram post with: “Let’s Build.” If this was ever said to me in person, I’d smack them in the face. Now, what exactly do you mean by, “Let’s Build”? Often times it’s me putting in the work and getting nothing in return. Most up and coming artists who use that phrase have no type of blue print in furthering their career, let alone invest in it.
They haven’t laid any type of foundation in their city, barely get plas on soundcloud, or whatever platform they post their music on, have booked no shows, yet expect a blog to have them reach new heights. A blog is supposed to help with your exposure, not jumpstart your career. So, no: I do not want to build with you nor do I want to work with you if my time is going to be wasted.
Help me help you. Build your own crediblity and invest in yourself before approaching me or anyone in regards to building your career 🙂
