Jhené Aiko Drops New Song ‘Lead The Way’

As Disney+ prepares the release of its new film, Raya and the Last Dragon, the streaming service taps on Jhené Aiko for the official soundtrack.

Aiko lends her contribution to the record, “Lead The Way.” Teaming up with Oscar-nominated composer James Newton-Howard, Aiko states it was a dream come true being able to contribute to the upcoming animated film.

“The number one thing was I heard dragon, and I love dragons. I have a big dragon tattoo on my back. I was born in ’88, which is the year of the dragon. And I just think it’s a beautiful, mystical creature that is just so many things, symbolizes so many things for me, personally,” the Chilombo singer told Apple Music. “I’ve always had this little fantasy of being a Disney princess, voicing one, or like being the character. And so this was the closest that I’ve gotten, so I was pretty excited.”

A music video has already been shot for the song and is set to premiere next month. Directed by Raya and the Last Dragon director Carlos López Estrada, Aiko wanted to make Disney proud.

“I wanted to make Disney proud, because I grew up on Disney,” she added. “And yeah, it’s special. Where I live right now, they’re just put up a big billboard for the movie. So I was just like, ‘Look at that. Look at life.’ Just happy.”

Back in February, shots were fired at a video shoot in southwest Atlanta, where 42 Dugg and Roddy Ricch were shooting a visual for their now announced single, “4 Da Gang.” As a result of the shooting, three people were injured and police detained and arrested a 40-year-old man on drug charges, though he was not suspected to be the shooter.

42 Dugg and Roddy Ricch left the scene unscathed, and we haven’t heard much about the single until now. Over the production of TayTayMadeIt, the record samples Scorpions’ 1982 single, “No One Like You.”

Neptune Gallant

After parting ways with Warner Bros., Gallant returns with his latest project as an independent artist titled, Neptune.

Though it’s labeled an EP, it is an 8-track effort that consists of features from Brandy, VanJess and Arin Ray. Backed by his leading single, “Comeback,” Gallant was inspired by feelings of nostalgia when trying to come up with the lyrics:

“I put the lyrics of ‘Comeback.’ together from pages of notes I had typed up late at night and saved on my computer (and didn’t really want anyone else to read),” Gallant explains via press release. “I was having some trouble finding a spark of inspiration and at the same time, I had these small bits and pieces of early 2000s R&B floating around in my head that I could never really turn into any good ideas.”

Neptune serves as a follow-up to his 2019-project, Sweet Insomnia, which featured 13-tracks with contributions from 6lack and Sabrina Claudio.
